Digital Accessibility

Brown University is committed to ensuring that our digital environment is inclusive and accessible to all members of our community.

A 2024 rule by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) mandates that digital content and tools provided by the University must meet accessibility standards by May 11, 2026. Achieving that requirement will require action by faculty and staff members across campus, supported by guidance and resources from multiple units at Brown.

The Office of BioMed Communications is working closely with the university to ensure that all BioMed digital properties are in compliance with these new guidelines and are on track to meet the goals set forth by HHS in advance of the May 11 deadline. If you have questions about your digital properties or any other accessibility-related concerns, please reach out to our office.

What you need to know

  • Websites built on Brown’s standard brown.edu templates were reviewed for accessibility before launch. However, if content has been added, particularly graphics, you should review them for compliance. The web accessibility training video explains what to look for.
  • Websites not on brown.edu or sites.brown.edu – such as lab or clinical practice sites – that are affiliated with Brown must also comply with these accessibility standards.
  • For PowerPoint presentations, our BioMed/Medical School PPT templates follow accessibility standards if slides use the embedded heading system. In existing PPT slide decks, you can type “accessibility” into the “Tell me what you want me to do…” field in PPT to launch the program’s Accessibility Checker, which will identify issues to address.
  • PDFs and other documents on websites or in course materials that are no longer being used and are not accessible should be deleted (download a copy first if you want a record). If the documents are not current but need to be kept public, put them in a clearly labeled "Archive" section as described in this FAQ. The FAQ also contains instructions on how to make documents and PDFs accessible.

For course materials, the Course Accessibility Checklist can help identify and address barriers to access.
